Course Description: This course is designed to explore a variety of musical styles, forms, composers, instruments, and performers. Students will acquire the vocabulary, concepts, theory, and history necessary to critique music in an intelligent manner. Students will gain an understanding of, and respect for, the role and importance of music in their lives and in all cultures.

Weekly Assignments:
The weekly assignments will be in TEAMS on Sunday, no later than Monday for you to submit by Friday at 11:59 pm. At that time, the assignment will expire and WILL NOT be reopened. Go to TEAMS and look under the Assignment Tab to view the assignment. All assignments are numbered. Do not create a word document; one has already been created for you. Answer the questions on the word document provided. Answers MUST BE obtained from the video ONLY!!! I will accept no other answers other than what’s in the video. Please remember, all assignments are time-sensitive and will not be reopened.
Research Projects:
Research and write a project (1 every 9 weeks/quarter) from each of the musical periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern). Research papers must include 3 resources in the bibliography and one resource must be a book; the other two can be from online resources. You must submit a Research Title for approval before beginning to work on your Research Project. Font 12” Times Roman. Your word count must be a minimum of 500 words. Your title page and bibliography will NOT count towards your 500-word requirement.

- 1st 9 weeks due date: Submissions will be closed on Tuesday, September 30th at 2:15pm
- 2nd 9 weeks due date: Submissions will be closed on Tuesday, December 9th at 2:15pm
- 3rd 9 weeks due date: Submissions will be closed on Tuesday, March 3rd at 2:15pm
- 4th 9 weeks due date: Submissions will be closed on Tuesday, May 19th at 2:15pm
The composition of the research project should include the following:
- Title page (first page)
- Beginning second page: Context, 500 words; paragraphs.
- Last Page; Bibliography that includes 3 resources. One must be a book with two other online resources. Please use the correct form as above.
- Be careful of plagiarism, i.e. copying word for word.
- Refer to the Research Paper Rubric below for the grading of your research project.
Please Note: no research projects will be accepted or scored if you do the following: email me your research project, ask me to print it out for you, bring me a printed copy, bring me a written copy, or use your flash drive. All research projects must be submitted through TEAMS, not any other way. No exceptions! No research project will be accepted after the due date; the system is set up to deny all research projects after the due date automatically resulting in a 0% in the Focus. Any plagiarism will result in 0%.
Materials
- For taking notes from class lectures, defining vocabulary words from the board and periodic/random, unannounced vocabulary checks, secure a 70-page spiral notebook. I am not accepting any other notebook for the class. NO EXCEPTION!!!
- 1 Pencil/Pen every class.

LANGUAGE USE, ACCURACY: Research paper has been edited for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Few or minor errors.
SCORE: 2 = 80% – 89%
DESCRIPTION: Good
COMPLETION OF TASK: Student has chosen an appropriate title. Research paper is less than 500 words. Title page may or may not be included. Research has incomplete Bibliography; format and number. Improper format of footnotes.
TOPIC DEVELOPMENT, CONTENT: Research paper includes the important details of the title.
LANGUAGE USE, ACCURACY: Research paper has been edited for grammar, punctuation, and spelling. More than a few errors.
SCORE: 1 = 70% – 79%
DESCRIPTION: Poor
COMPLETION OF TASK: Student has chosen an appropriate title. Research paper is far less than the required 500 words. Title page is missing. No bibliography or footnote(s) (if quotes are included in paper) are included.
TOPIC DEVELOPMENT, CONTENT: Research paper includes some details of the title.
LANGUAGE USE, ACCURACY: Major errors are found throughout.
SCORE: 0 = 60% – 69%
DESCRIPTION: Unsatisfactory
COMPLETION OF TASK: Student did not choose an appropriate title. No bibliography or footnote(s).
TOPIC DEVELOPMENT, CONTENT: Research paper strays from the chosen title. Content is shallow and meaningless.
LANGUAGE USE, ACCURACY: Errors make reading of the research paper difficult.
